Opportunity Corridor Would Wall Out Transit

Opportunity Corridor

Although our group generally opposes the Opportunity Corridor on conceptual grounds, the details of the actual project cast increasing doubt on claims that this project will benefit pedestrians and neighborhood residents.

Below is the “preferred alternative” for East 55th Street. Notice 13-foot retaining walls separating Slavic Village from the East 55th Street Rapid Station.

But don’t worry, project planners have it all figured out. They’ll just send transit dependent people way out of their way if they want to take the train.

So the new route to the rapid station for transit riders will be two-and-one-half times as along, but suburban commuters will save a couple minutes.

This project could not be a better example of the inequity that arises from car-centered transportation projects.
